The Story and the Novel

October 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Long ago I used to write short stories. Now, not so much. But they are still important to me, and someday I’ll get back to writing, perhaps. And even if not, I can at least serve as an ambassador, right? This essay in the NY Times was great.

Books and babes

September 11th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Sweet web site.
Which leads me to ask…what are current household favorites? And what were some of your favorite books as a baby/kid/young adult?

Freight Train is a big hit around here right now, as are the usual suspects, Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Also a couple books about airplanes. Our friend Janet gave us The [...]

Mother and son

April 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Dan Savage’s current “Savage Love” column made me cry, um, a lot. The support he felt from his mom, his love for her…it’s a wonderful thing. All children deserve to be treated with such care and respect. And his theatre ticket offer at the end of the piece…okay, enough with the crying already.

Recommended reading–God’s Middle Finger

February 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments

full disclosure–this book is written by a good friend of ours, but he is also an amazing writer, and we promise you will love this read.
Here’s a blurb:
“This is exactly the book you’re hoping for when you pick it up: a
crazy, sprawling story so well-written, you can’t decide whether to
keep reading or go to Mexico [...]

More lights, please

November 28th, 2007 · 2 Comments

The seasonal lights abound. This weekend is the start of the Tucson Zoo’s annual “Zoo Lights”.  Lots of pretty sparkly things, hot chocolate, and Santa (so, yeah, it’s more “Christmas” than “Holiday”–but Santa-Christmas, rather than Baby-Jesus-Christmas). The event runs Thursday through Sunday evenings during the month of December, from 6-8pm. The animals aren’t on display [...]
