This is a wonderful piece. I especially relate to it because I work in student services as well.
I look forward to following her as she pursues a higher-level job in academia.

Flirting toward a disaster?
October 6th, 2008 · 2 Comments
I hope it is toward a disaster. I hope the winkin’ and stuff doesn’t help move them toward victory.
Thanks to our friend Jesse for this piece from The Guardian.
(but the author wrote “preceded” where she should have used “proceeded”, and it’s bugging me–but maybe the spelling/usage is different in the UK? Rachel?)
Okay, and one more [...]

Totally loved Michelle Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s speeches at the DNC.
I still get all emotional about Clinton’s campaign. I was so conflicted about who to vote for in the primaries. I remember being on the phone with Erika O while I was in line at the polls and we were going back and forth about [...]

Shared parenting at cocktail parties?
August 13th, 2008 · 5 Comments
Okay, let me ask you this–if you go to some kind of social event, say a grown-up cocktail party, with your toddler, how do you and your partner share the task of preventing chaos in someone else’s house? Even with a fairly mellow two-year-old, there’s work to do, right? I mean if it’s a party [...]

Dan Savage’s current “Savage Love” column made me cry, um, a lot. The support he felt from his mom, his love for her…it’s a wonderful thing. All children deserve to be treated with such care and respect. And his theatre ticket offer at the end of the piece…okay, enough with the crying already.

More on gender and politics

This article sums up many of my thoughts about the electibility of Hillary Clinton. I know that people who don’t want her elected can articulate reasons aside from gender and likeability. But I firmly believe that our culture’s notions about gender play a huge role in how we view women in power.
(edited to add the [...]

Families Rising

This is a letter from MomsRising about a new, affliated organization, FamiliesRising:
Dear MomsRising Member,
On Father’s Day last year we launched FamiliesRising.org, a mirror webspace that provides a venue for Dads, Grandparents, and anyone who doesn’t feel Momly to connect with the issues we are working on–because frankly our issues are family issues. We’ve got some [...]

Borat Osama is not his name
January 8th, 2008 · 4 Comments
Why is it that we hear Ms. Clinton referred to as “Hillary” and Mr. Obama as “Barack”, while it’s just “McCain”, “Huckabee”, “Giuliani”, etc?I can sort of see the reasoning behind “Hillary”, as “Clinton” is too ambiguous. With “Barack”, my suspicion (fear) is that “Obama” sounds too much like “Osama”, and people are either afraid to [...]
