Excellent piece on gender variant children

There’s a fantastic article in the most recent New York Times magazine on gender fluid children, with a focus on the experience of so-called “pink boys” at a summer camp just for them and their families. The accompanying slideshow is wonderful.

I can’t imagine how freeing it must be for these kids to present themselves however they like, without worry or fear or even hesitation. I know someone who went to this camp with her son and she said it was “the happiest he’d ever been in his life”. What a delight it is to watch our children enjoying themselves in the world–as their whole selves. As whoever the feel like they are at that time.

If you or anyone you know has a gender variant child, please know that there is a support group in town. Feel free to email them at campbornthisway@sagatucson.org with any questions.

Like all aspects of parenting, it’s so helpful to remember we are part of a community. It is just a treat to read of a healthy and nurturing place like this camp. The image of two friends running in the woods in dresses, holding hands, is incredibly moving to me.
