A huge thanks to the fabulous Tucsonan-on-sabbatical-in-Florence alittlegnocchi for organizing this! She says:

Trying to come up with a good idea to honor the moms in your life this Mother’s Day? Forgo the chocolates that will be gone in a single evening, the flowers that will wilt and fade. Instead, why not honor your mother with an investment in our world?

They’re not cute or fun, but diapers, wipes, and sanitary items are some of the most requested yet least donated items to those in need. In these uncertain times it is easy to become overwhelmed by the dismal news around us, but take a moment to think of the impact you can have by addressing a simple, basic need among the most vulnerable in our population, our children. If you hit hard times and had to debate between paying the utility bill or for your month’s bus pass to work, or diapers for your little one, how could you choose? Hopefully, you don’t have to – and neither should other parents.

Please join me in honoring the mother figure(s) in your life by participating in the Tucson Mama Diaper Drive benefiting the nation’s first diaper bank, Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona . Donate more than $25 via our Amazon Wishlist (email us a proof of purchase at diaperdrive at gmail dot com and your honorees name) by midnight on May 8th and you’ll receive a spiffy e-card to present to your loved one.

This year on Mother’s Day, I vow to move away from the Hallmark card and the flowers and back to the original sentiment behind Mother’s Day. I want to honor my mother, and the other mothers in my life, by nurturing: by helping other mothers, other parents, other daughters and sons—and in doing so, helping to build a better world for my child and all children. Won’t you join me?

Wow – I just had a look at the Amazon Wishlist, and I can’t believe how expensive diapers have gotten in the many years since I was buying them for my daughter! It also brings to mind the times when my mom helped out when I just couldn’t make ends meet. Now that I’m in a position to provide some karmic payback, this is a quick and easy way to do it – so another mom will have one less thing to worry about, at least for a little while.
