We love a parade

pol_logo.jpgOne of our favorite events is coming up–the Downtown Parade of Lights marches through the ‘hood on Saturday, December 8th. If you’ve never gone before, check it out–you’ll be back every year, we promise. Marching bands make us all teary and giddy for some reason, but man, when they are LIT UP like that, bass drums booming down the dark streets of Armory Park, the kids in full regalia–oh, it just slays us. It’s a very kid-friendly event. Last year we took our newborn baby, and he was enchanted and delighted, just like we were. Lots of freaky Christmas floats, too, the super-festive kind that are just this side of scary.

That URL is pretty slim on details. About how long does it last? Who were the marching bands that you recall?

Yeah, thin on details, you’re right! The parade lasts maybe 90 minutes? Anyone?
They’re still accepting submissions for parade floats, so can’t say for sure what it will be like this year.
But going by the previous years’ offerings, it’s an eclectic mix, which is what makes it so much fun.
There are usually junior high/high school marching bands–good ones, doing funky dances. There are civic organizations–a councilperson in a fancy car, for example. And there is the random Lord-y float, with a baby Jesus and some religious hymns. There are kids singing carols and throwing candies and, yes, from what I recall, there were Shriners in their tiny cars, at least they were there one year, I think.
That’s the fun of it–you don’t know what the parade will consist of–but it’s cold, you’re bundled up (and perhaps a little buzzed on red wine), and it’s all good, as the hippies say.
